What personal data we collect and why we collect it
Comments
When users post comments on the website, we collect the data displayed in the comment form, as well as the user's IP address and the user agent string (which identifies the browser) to help detect spam.
An anonymised string can be created from your e-mail address (also called a hash) and passed to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using it. The privacy policy of the Gravatar service can be found here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment has been approved, your profile picture is publicly visible in the context of your comment.
Media
If you are a registered user and upload photos to this website, you should avoid uploading photos with an EXIF GPS location. Users of this website could download photos stored on this website and extract their location information.
Cookies

If you have an account and log in to this website, we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser accepts cookies. This cookie does not contain any personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you sign up, we will set up some cookies to store your login information and display options. Login cookies expire after two days and display options cookies expire after one year. If you select "Stay signed in" when you sign up, your sign-in will be maintained for a fortnight. When you log out of your account, the login cookies are deleted.
When you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is stored in your browser. This cookie does not contain any personal data and only refers to the article ID of the article you have just edited. The cookie expires after one day.
Embedded content from other websites
Contributions on this website may contain embedded content (e.g. videos, images, contributions etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if the user had visited the other website.
These websites may collect information about you, use cookies, embed additional third party tracking services and record your interaction with this embedded content, including your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged into this website.
Analysis services
Use of the website analysis tool Matomo (formerly PIWIK)
Programs for the evaluation of user behaviour on the websites of VerbaAlpina are only used by VerbaAlpina in anonymised form. We use the open source software tool Matomo (formerly PIWIK) to analyse surfing behaviour. The software sets a cookie on your computer. If individual pages – including sub-pages – of our internet pages are called up, the following data is stored anonymously:
- Two bytes of the IP address of the calling system (user's system)
- The internet page accessed
- The Internet page from which the user accessed the accessed Internet page (referrer)
- The subpages that are called up from the called-up Internet page
- The length of time spent on the website
- The frequency with which the website is accessed
- Information on operating system, browser type, screen resolution
The software is set in such a way that IP addresses are not stored completely, but 2 bytes of the IP address are masked. In this way, a clear assignment to the calling computer is no longer possible. Thus, your IP address is always anonymised even before an evaluation.
The software runs exclusively on the servers of the LMU Center for Digital Humanities (ITG). The data is only stored on these servers. It is not passed on to third parties. Further information on Matomo can be found at https://matomo.org/docs/privacy/ (external link).
The use of Matomo can generally be switched off by settings in your internet browser.
You can decide whether a unique internet analysis cookie may be stored in your browser in order to enable the operator of the website to collect and analyse various statistical – non-personal – data. The use of the internet analysis cookie is for the purpose of constantly improving the quality of our internet pages and their contents as well as the user-friendliness. Web analysis cookies make it clear how the website is used, which means that the offer can be optimised.
If you wish to opt out, please activate the checkbox to place the Matomo deactivation cookie in your browser.
With whom we share your data
VerbaAlpina does not share personal data with anyone. However, registered users can contact other registered users within the backend of VerbaAlpina (after logging in) and, in the course of this, view the user names and possibly also the e-mail addresses of other users.
How long we store your data
When you leave a comment, it is saved indefinitely, including metadata. This way we can automatically detect and approve follow-up comments instead of keeping them in a moderation queue.
